Situation

PLOS is an open-access science, technology, and medicine publisher with a library of open-access journals and other scientific literature under an open-content license.
PLOS publishes a suite of influential Open Access journals across all areas of science and medicine for researchers across the globe.

Challenge

Digital technology & data are increasingly important for PLOS and no current board member had this domain experience.
We recruited two board directors knowledgeable about technology, digital transformation, and cyber security to serve as digital evangelists advising PLOS on the best way forward with data, digital information, AI and technology. These individuals will not lead these initiatives, but push and challenge the CEO and board to gracefully take PLOS to the next level industry knowledge and functional expertise.

Result

Dr. Arlene Espinal is Head of Cloud Data Sciences across products and platforms for Commerce and Ecosystems for Microsoft and has a PhD in Quantum Physics. She has been voted as a 2021 Top 50 Most Powerful Woman in Technology by the National Diversity & Leadership Council.
Steven Tom is SVP Chief Customer Officer for Adtalem Global Education. He is a digital transformation specialist with a background in online learning, knowledgeable about analytics & AI, IoT, and microlearning products. Steven oversees information technology including application development, infrastructure operations and enterprise architecture.
